Story Notes:

I suppose this qualifies as my new authors notes on a couple of my stories that are about to be uploaded to the fanfiction archive. My gosh, they are old, but I love them and they are extremely personal to me. Suze Berry is nice enough to handle that uploading for me since God knows I’m so overwhelmed with life. These two stories are what I consider the very heart of the KFTLC love letter that my personal fanfiction catalogue represents. Fanfiction IS our love letter to shows that become more than entertainment, more than something watched then replaced.

RUSH and GRIEF’S MELANCHOLY SHADE are stories that sprang from a monologue by Kermit in the episode “Storm Warning.” Honestly, there’s no argument that Scott Wentworth is a one of a kind actor who has made what began as a small supporting character into a driving force for the entire series who had a complex and ever evolving backstory we couldn’t get enough of. In that one less than three minute delivery, Kermit told us about his younger brother’s murder and Scott played it with such restrained heartbreak it still gets to me. I thought it was quite a magical moment that Scott gave us an entire life for an offscreen character with such emotion that you almost feel that David Griffin had actually been shown to us. I’ve watched that scene far too many times and within moments of seeing it the first time I felt like showing that story Kermit touched so briefly on was important.
I started writing GRIEF with my friend Rhonda Hallstrom and it was by far what I consider our best work. She was truly a remarkable writer and had the ability to bring out my best that’s for sure. Sadly, during this process, Rhonda passed away in an unexpected and tragic way. I was bereft and thought I’d never write anymore of this story. But slowly I healed and knowing that Rhonda would want this story finished I got my ass in gear and did so. I didn’t want to let her down or let David and Kermit down by not telling their story as I saw it. After finishing Grief, it just seemed like I needed to show David as that adult Kermit was mourning and wrote Rush as the setup for his last job that lead to his death. Maybe one day I’ll write about the actual story of Douglas Larsen killing David (God knows that’s been in my head long enough ????)
So when it’s uploaded on Tuesday, please give it a read and let me know what you think. Poor Kermit, he’s been through a lot under the cruel craft of writers but he takes it like a champ.
